my approach
“The therapist must strive to create a new therapy for each patient” - Irving Yalom
I call myself an eclectic practitioner, meaning I draw from a variety of evidence-based approaches. As indicated by the quote above, I modify my approach to each individual I work with. That being said, I do consider the modalities listed below to be the cornerstones of my practice. I also have training in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). My practice is trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive.
mindfulness
Mindfulness is the ability to pay attention to your experiences with openness and curiosity. Both formal and informal mindfulness practices help you hone this ability of shifting your attention and awareness to the here-and-now. Practicing mindfulness helps us access our wisest, inner selves, even when life is full of difficulties.
acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT for short) uses acceptance and mindfulness techniques in combination with behavioral changes to help people live meaningful lives based on their personal values. ACT skills are designed to increase your psychological flexibility - meaning you become better able to deal with change while living fully in the present moment. ACT skills can help you deal with distressing thoughts and emotions, improve your problem-solving capabilities, and identify what is truly important and meaningful to you.
motivational interviewing
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative approach where we work together to explore your motivations for change. It is normal to feel ambivalent and uncertain about making a change in your life, even if you think it will ultimately benefit you. Together, we can develop an action plan for change that works for you and builds on your existing strengths.
EXISTENTIALISM
Sometimes my clients come to therapy with a specific goal in mind or behavior they want to change, but often after we’ve tackled these bigger questions arise. Questions like - what makes my life meaningful? Who is my true self, or my higher self? How do I make sense of life, death, and the universe at large? I can support you as you build a philosophical or spiritual framework that is unique to you and provides you with peace and purpose.
